The cheapest way to ship from Canada to the US
Updated October 14, 2026
Shipping from Canada to the US is one of the most common cross-border runs there is, and it does not have to be expensive. The trick is knowing what actually sets the price, packing so you are not paying for empty space, and getting the customs paperwork right. Here is how the cost works, and how to send your shipment for less.

What actually decides the price
Three things set the cost of a US shipment: how big and heavy the parcel is, the service speed you choose, and the value and type of what is inside. Weight matters, but for anything larger than an envelope the size of the box matters just as much.
Couriers charge on the greater of the actual weight or the dimensional (volumetric) weight, worked out from the box measurements. A light but bulky box is usually priced on its size, not the scale. Documents are the cheapest to send, parcels and gifts sit in the middle, and heavy or high-value commercial goods cost the most because of both weight and customs.
- Size and weight: charged on whichever is greater
- Service speed: express costs more than economy
- Contents and value: documents are cheapest; commercial goods may attract duty
Courier, post or freight: which is cheapest?
For a single parcel of documents, gifts or products, a courier is usually the best balance of price and reliability across the border, with door-to-door tracking and the customs paperwork handled for you. National post can look cheaper on very small, light items, but delivery times and tracking to the US are less predictable, and you handle the declaration yourself.
Freight becomes worthwhile for pallets or large, heavy consignments, where the per-kilogram cost drops and cross-border road transport is the efficient option. For most people and small businesses sending one or two boxes, a flat-rate courier is the cheapest sensible choice once you factor in tracking and the time saved on paperwork.
How to pack so you pay less
Because you can be charged on the size of the box, packing tight is the simplest way to cut the cost. Use the smallest sturdy box that fits your items, remove empty space, and avoid oversized cartons with lots of padding around a small item.
To work out the volumetric weight, multiply the length, width and height in inches and divide by 139 to get pounds, then divide by 2.2 to convert pounds to kilograms. If that number is higher than the actual weight, you are paying for air. Choosing a box one size down, or consolidating items into one parcel, often saves more than any discount code.
- Use the smallest sturdy box that fits the contents
- Remove void space rather than padding it out
- Check volumetric weight: (L x W x H in inches) ÷ 139 = lbs, then ÷ 2.2 = kg
- Consolidate several items into one well-packed box
US customs, duty and paperwork
Every shipment entering the US is assessed by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Duties and taxes are set by CBP based on the type of goods, their declared value and their country of origin, not by the courier. Most parcels travel with a commercial or proforma invoice describing the contents and value, and an accurate declaration is what keeps the shipment moving.
The rules on low-value shipments to the US have changed in recent years, so the safest approach is to declare honestly and let us advise on what currently applies to your parcel. Under-declaring value to avoid duty is a false economy that usually causes delays, penalties or a returned shipment. We prepare the paperwork so your shipment clears the border correctly the first time.

- Most shipments need a commercial or proforma invoice

The cheapest option for what you are sending
Documents are the cheapest and simplest, so a standard courier envelope is all you need for contracts and paperwork. Parcels, gifts and products are best sent in a compact, well-packed box on an economy service if you are not in a rush, with a clear commercial invoice prepared.
For e-commerce orders and regular business shipments, consolidating and setting up recurring pickups keeps the per-shipment cost down. If you are not sure which lane is best for your parcel, a quick call gets you a clear, flat price before anything is collected.
