The cheapest way to send a parcel to India from Canada

Updated October 14, 2026

Sending a parcel from Canada to India does not have to be expensive or complicated. The trick is knowing what actually drives the price, packing so you are not paying for empty space, and getting the customs paperwork right the first time. Here is how the cost really works, and how to send your parcel for less.

What actually decides the price

Three things set the cost of an India shipment: how big and heavy the parcel is, the service speed you choose, and the value and type of what is inside. Most people look at weight alone, but for anything larger than an envelope, the size of the box matters just as much.

Couriers charge on the greater of the actual weight or the dimensional (volumetric) weight, which is worked out from the box measurements. A light but bulky box, like bedding or a soft-toy parcel, is usually priced on its size, not the reading on the scale. Documents are the cheapest to send, gifts and clothing sit in the middle, and heavy or high-value commercial goods cost the most because of both weight and customs.

  • Size and weight: charged on whichever is greater
  • Service speed: express costs more than economy
  • Contents and value: documents are cheapest; commercial goods attract duty

Courier, post or freight: which is cheapest?

For a single parcel of documents, gifts or clothing, a courier is almost always the best balance of price and reliability, with door-to-door tracking and customs handled for you. National post can look cheaper on very small, light items, but tracking and delivery times to India are less predictable, and you handle the customs paperwork yourself.

Freight only becomes worthwhile for large or heavy consignments, like a full house move or commercial pallets, where the per-kilogram cost drops. For most families and small businesses sending one or two boxes, a flat-rate courier is the cheapest sensible option once you factor in tracking, insurance and the time saved on paperwork.

How to pack so you pay less

Because you can be charged on the size of the box, packing tight is the simplest way to cut the cost. Use the smallest sturdy box that fits your items, remove empty space, and avoid oversized cartons with lots of padding around a small item.

To work out the volumetric weight, multiply the length, width and height in inches and divide by 139 to get pounds, then divide by 2.2 to convert pounds to kilograms. If that number is higher than the actual weight, you are paying for air. Choosing a box one size down, or splitting a very large light parcel, often saves more than any discount code.

  • Use the smallest sturdy box that fits the contents
  • Remove void space rather than padding it out
  • Check volumetric weight: (L x W x H in inches) ÷ 139 = lbs, then ÷ 2.2 = kg
  • Seal with strong tape and keep a list of contents

Customs, duty and the KYC rule

Every parcel to India passes through customs, and India has one rule that catches people out: KYC, short for Know Your Customer. For most non-document shipments, the receiver in India needs to provide ID, such as an Aadhaar card, passport, PAN card or voter ID, before the parcel is released. Commercial shipments may also need an IEC (Importer Exporter Code), and an authorisation letter or power of attorney when a representative handles the formalities. Getting this ready in advance is the single biggest thing you can do to avoid delays.

Documents are usually duty-free. Gifts and personal items may attract duty depending on their declared value, and commercial goods almost always do. Duty is set by Indian customs, not by the courier, so an honest, accurate declaration is what keeps your parcel moving and avoids surprise charges or returns. We prepare the paperwork and walk your receiver through KYC so nothing stalls at the border.

  • KYC: the India receiver provides ID (Aadhaar, passport, PAN or voter ID) for most non-document parcels
  • Businesses: IEC, plus an authorisation letter or power of attorney if a representative acts for you
  • Documents are typically duty-free
  • Gifts and commercial goods may attract duty set by Indian customs
  • Accurate declarations prevent delays, extra charges and returns

The cheapest option for what you are sending

Documents and paperwork are the cheapest and simplest, with no KYC and no duty in most cases, so a standard courier envelope is all you need. Gifts, clothing and household items are best sent in a compact, well-packed box on an economy service if you are not in a rush, with KYC arranged before it ships.

Excess baggage and larger personal effects, common when someone is moving or studying abroad, are usually cheaper as a consolidated shipment than as airline excess baggage. We can advise whether courier or freight works out cheaper for your weight and timeline. If you are not sure which lane is best for your parcel, a quick call gets you a clear, flat price before anything is collected.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to send a parcel to India from Canada?

It depends on the size and weight of the parcel, the service speed and what is inside. Small documents are the cheapest, while larger or heavier boxes are priced on the greater of their actual or dimensional weight. The best way to know is to request a flat quote, which we confirm before we collect so there are no surprises.

Is a courier or Canada Post cheaper for sending to India?

For most single parcels a flat-rate courier gives the best balance of price, tracking and reliability, with customs handled for you. National post can be cheaper on very small, light items, but delivery times to India are less predictable and you handle the paperwork yourself.

What is KYC and why does India need it?

KYC (Know Your Customer) is an Indian customs requirement. For most non-document shipments, the receiver provides ID such as an Aadhaar or PAN card before the parcel is released. Preparing it in advance is the best way to avoid delays, and we guide your receiver through it.

How long does it take to ship a parcel from Canada to India?

Express services are typically the fastest, with economy taking longer. Transit time also depends on customs clearance and having KYC ready. Around festivals such as Diwali, volumes are higher, so it is worth shipping earlier.

Can I send gifts or food to India?

Gifts are fine and may attract duty depending on their declared value. Some foods are allowed and others are restricted, so it is best to check with us before you pack. We will confirm what can go and how to declare it.
